With Kansas City punter Tommy Townsend dealing with a left knee injury, special teams coach Dave Toub revealed that the team’s contingency plan for its game against the Chargers this weekend is none other than the franchise QB.
‘[Mahomes] is our backup punter,’ Toub told reporters Thursday, via ESPN. ‘He could do it. He shows me all the time he’s out there [at practice]. Boom. That guy, it’s unbelievable.’

Townsend played through pain vs. the Broncos last week and was seen wearing a knee sleeve prior to the game. He’s listed on the Chiefs’ injury report this week but practiced fully on Wednesday.
Nonetheless, Mahomes has experience punting if he’s forced into the role on Sunday. The two-time Super Bowl winner punted at Whitehouse High School in Texas.
There, he fired off 29 punts for an average of 37.8 yards, per ESPN. In the passing game, Mahomes has looked like his usual brilliant self this season as he’s thrown for 1,593 yards and 11 touchdowns through six games. The Chiefs host the Chargers at 4:25ET on Sunday.
