The Green Bay Packers had their chances, but in the end fell to the Pittsburgh Steelers 23-19 on Sunday. The loss dropped the Packers to 3-6 on the season and well out of any playoff conversation.
Currently, the Packers still hold the sixth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, however, many believe that the team will need to utilize free agency and the trade market if they want to address all areas of weakness on the team.
One on-field leader that has been previously linked to the Packers has yet again been named an ideal candidate for the team next season. Freddie Boston of Fansided put together his “dream lineup” for the Packers in 2024. Chinn was on the list.
Jeremy Chinn would be a dream free-agent signing for the Packers. He can play safety, slot corner, and even linebacker. The Packers could have him start at safety, but he could also replace Keisean Nixon in the slot.
Chinn’s versatility and coverage ability immediately helps Green Bay’s secondary. The Carolina Panthers were reportedly open to trading Chinn this season prior to the trade deadline.
However, Chinn’s rookie contract expires after the end of the 2023 season and figures to be one of the top Safety options in free agency. Shockingly, the Packers defense has only given up the sixth fewest yards through the air so far (1,688), and the second fewest touchdown passes (8).
On the flip side, they rank 25th in rush yards allowed (1,197). Adding Chinn would be huge for a secondary that just lost Rasul Douglas.
The Packers’ defense hasn’t been as bad as advertised this year (aside from the rush defense). A matter of retooling a few positions and possibly a new defensive coordinator could do wonders for the talent level that is already in place.
